Recent investigations have revealed that physiologic leaf spot or chloride-deficient syndrome can be reproduced in hydroponics by withholding chloride from nutrient solutions.

The photographs below are from a study conducted at the Montana State University Plant Growth Center. Western Plant Breeders 881 durum (WB881) was grown under hydroponics in a growth room. This durum has shown great susceptibility to physiologic leaf spot in field studies.

Note differences in leaf spot severity of WB881 durum (1 wk post-anthesis) at three chloride levels in hydroponic medium.

Does bromide substitute for chloride's role in leaf spot suppression ?
